Since the last 40 years or so they have been primarily used to offer excellent sailing opportunities for tourists who wish to cruise in style and comfort instead of sitting packed like sardines in the small sitting areas available on most sailing boats.
If you sail on board a gulet you will soon learn to appreciate the spacious accommodation, the resting areas on the decks in front and at the aft as well as the comfortable saloon. Standing on the top of the upper deck you will be impressed by the power of the wind when it fills the large sails and pushes the yacht smoothly through the waves.
Real gulets have no cabins at the back, which is raised well above the water line. This gives this type of yachts their very special profile.
A similar type of Turkish-built wooden yachts have one or two cabins at the aft. These are not typical gulets, although, in Croatia they are usually called so. In Turkey these yachts are named ketches.A very typical gulet is the yacht that my wife and I bought in Turkey in the year 2000. Her name is Algarina and she is the most beautiful boat that we have ever seen. Of course, we are biased, but look at the picture below and tell us if you don’t agree.
We used to sail with her a lot together with friends and relatives both in Turkey and Greece to explore the wonderful coast of Turkey from Istanbul to Göcek and a large part of the Aegean Sea with its many islands.
In September 2006 we transferred Algarina to Croatia where she is now moored at Marina Hramina on the island of Murter, which is located at the very middle of the Croatian coast.

The last couple of years we have cruised around quite a lot to discover the secrets of the Dalmatian coast (including Montenegro) and its very rich archipelago that has over thousand islands.
Just opposite our marina is a most interesting national park called the Kornati comprising 140 special-looking islands with very scarce vegetation. You can read more about this interesting archipelago at http://www.kornati.com/
Other islands and places of special interest are, for instance:
- Rab
- Zadar
- Sibenik
- Primosten
- Trogir
- Split
- Hvar
- Korcula
- Dubrovnik
As from 2009 we offer our gulet Algarina for charter in Croatia.
In case you wish to learn more about us or use the opportunity to cruise on Algarina along the Dalmatian coast following a route of your own choice at a period of the year convenient to you, then please feel free to visit us at our website http://www.adriayachting.se/
